Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. Concert at National Guard Armory, Millwood, West Virginia8976

The National Guard Armory in Millwood, West Virginia, was the place to be November 15 if you were a classic R&B fan. The Classic Christmas Crooners Tour came to the National Guard to perform a medley of hits from back in the day. The concert featured America’s Got Talent winner Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. and former lead vocalists from The Temptations, The Platters and The Drifters. The singers will be accompanied by Landau’s Classic Christmas Orchestra.

Murphy, a West Virginia native, is a complete rags-to-riches story. According to his biography on his website, Murphy was singing while working at a car wash before auditioning for America’s Got Talent. After his time on the competition show, Murphy has released his debut album on Columbia Records, “That’s Life.” The album has now hit number one on the Billboard Jazz chart.

Murphy’s visit to West Virginia reflects Murphy’s love for his home state. “West Virginia will always be my home and home and family are the most important [things] in the world to me,” said Murphy. “I can always fly out to LA or New York for work, but being here helps keep me humble and grounded.”

Jessica Cummings, the executive director of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, Inc., talked more about the event and its special purpose for the community.

“This event was a charity concert to raise funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Neglected and Abused Children and Animal Rights Fur-ever both in Jackson County WV,” Cummings said. “The event was well attended and successful – especially considering the size of our small, rural community. We had an estimated 800 guests for the event.”

To promote the event, Cummings said different strategies were used. “We utilized press releases to regional papers, social media, billboards, radio promotion, and television interviews,” she said.

Everyone seemed to have a great time at the event. Cummings said that the entire concert was “phenomenal.”

If you’re planning on putting on an event similar to this one, Cummings said that being detailed is key. “Have a detailed plan of action, communicate with team members, and start early!” she said.
