Holy Smokes Charity Cigar Dinner to Help Dreams of Priesthood

By Lance Trebesch May 9, 2014

For Stephen Codekas, the way to priesthood is paved in cigars! Codekas is hoping to join the Catholic priesthood, but he needs some funding to be able to make his dream of becoming a Catholic priest a reality. So, on May 17th at the Trilogy Golf Club of La Quinta in La Quinta, California, Codekas is holding his Holy Smokes Charity Cigar Dinner.

Codekas said that he has always wanted to become a priest since childhood. “Since I was in kindergarten I have wanted to be a priest,” he said. “I love serving people, serving the church.  I’m also very selfish. I don’t want one or two kids. I want a hundred, a thousand. I don’t just want to be married for a lifetime. I want to be married to eternity.  Being a priest allows me to have those things. “

Codekas’ other love comes in a more secular form—cigars. He has had a passion for premium cigars for years, and he feels that combining the two will help him create a successful charity event.  “I worked in the premium cigar industry for four years,” said Codekas. “Having a cigar event combines two of my loves, theology and tobacco.”

Combining tobacco and priesthood aspirations is intriguing enough to make anyone want to come to the dinner, but there’s a ton more to look forward to. Codekas has many prizes ready to give away to his guests, as well as some featured entertainment.

“For auction we have some framed [pictures] and I think the most exciting prize, a pair of red papal slippers from the same designers that made Pope Benedict’s favorite pair,” said Codekas.  “Also [available is] a complete car detailing.”

“We have a jazz band coming–the Brian Nova Trio,” he said.  Nova is a famous jazz guitarist and vocalist who has the distinction of having studied and toured with Herb Ellis and Joe Pass, two of the jazz world’s biggest stars. According to Nova’s bio, he is considered one of the top jazz guitarists/vocalists in America. In fact, Pass himself has described Nova as “one of the finest jazz guitarists on the scene.”

“[Nova] is playing with Steve Miller the day before and has also played with Arturo Sandoval,” said Codekas. Sandoval and Nova have performed together on Sandoval’s CD Dear Liz, which garnered three Latin Grammys and one Grammy. Along with the jazz stylings of Nova, there will also be a DJ to keep people in the partying mood.

Codekas said he hopes to raise $3,000 from the event, so if you are a supporter of Codekas and want to see him succeed in his dreams toward becoming a Catholic priest, make sure to attend! “I hope to see you all there! Every little bit helps!” said Codekas.

Tickets cost $50 each (dinner and cigar). They can be ordered directly on TicketRiver. Contact Codekas for more info at 760-702-5099.
